Mosquito-bitten

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to figure out how to use Flickr as a photo host. My god. All this time i’ve been uploading my photos separately to 1. Facebook (sometimes) 2. Flickr (always), and 3. my own website, in order to then post them on my blog. I thought it was dumb that i couldn’t just post my Flickr photos on my blog and that there had to be some way to do it, but i was too dumb to figure it out until just now.

Apparently, you have to go to the photo on flickr, click on “all sizes” and then you’ll see the url for the photo. Is it just me or is that really non-intuitive?

Anyway, the photo is of a little shiba inu puppy Dan and i played with at a pet store in Des Moines on Friday. We went down there to eat at Red Robin and it just happened to be right by Pet Land, and there just happened to be a Shiba Inu puppy there. I want one really bad now. I would give it a japanese name, probably something from Sailor Moon like Usagi or Minako, to the poor pup’s everlasting shame.

We got Dr. Mario - Online RX for Wii this weekend and stayed up until 4 am with Ryan two nights in a row playing it. Talk about addicting. Saturday we got out for a while though, and ventured through the rain to Ledges state park on the motorcycles. We parked up above the closed-off park and hiked down to where we could see the water that’s completely overtaken the area. Most of the streets are open around central iowa, but the water levels are definitely still much higher than normal.

Oh wow, i can use Facebook as a photo host too!

Today we played more Dr. Mario with Nina, Karl and Ryan and then played some frisbee and boccee ball. We are covered in mosquito bites now, but it was worth it. Tomorrow i head to Des Moines for an interview, and will probably give Innova a follow-up call.

This is a map of the jobs i applied to last week. I didn’t realize until making this map that i’ve completely neglected to apply for any jobs in Iowa. There aren’t any i’m interested in, i guess. I’ve already been rejected by a handfull, so i feel like Iowa doesn’t even want me here. Screw it.

I want to go to Portland but it’s just painfully lacking in opportunity for the likes of me. My only shot would be freelancing, and that’s scary. I don’t really want to go to Chicago but there are so many more jobs there than anywhere else. I interview with the Tribune today at four.

I read that it takes an average of seventeen interviews to get a job. I think that means people either score right away or blow every interview they manage to get before giving up, and the average just happens to fall at seventeen. Not encouraging at all.

The good news is i’ve conquered every Grand Prix on Mario Kart and my name now bears a star next to it when i play online. I don’t think i’ve ever spent this much time on a video game before. Bravo, Nintendo. I hate you.

HI I’M DAISY!

Ok, yeah, Daisy is awesome, and i think this picture is proof that Dan’s right and i have a lot more in common with her than Rosalina.

I’ve been digging for the right photo for an hour now, and i’m pretty sure i’ve regressed 10 years in maturity. I have a definite urge to go home and draw Daisy wearing a pretty purple dress or something. But playing the actual game is more fun.

I feel pretty lost at the moment. I’ve had a couple of good interviews in the last week though, one in Des Moines and one with a company in Chicago, so maybe i’ll have some clear-cut options here soon. Portland seems strangely void of opportunity in the field of web design, so chances are i will have to keep on waiting for my chance to get back to Oregon one of these years.

I’ve been playing Mario Kart Wii every day for over a week now. I’m completely addicted, but i suspect i’ll grow sick of it in the next week or two and slow down quite a bit. This is my new alter-ego, Rosalina:

Rosalina

My character of choice, using the standard bike. Unstoppable. My next goal in life is to unlock Daisy and see if she measures up. The little girl in me still prefers the pretty princesses, and i swear i actually race better using them.

A new crop of graduates just took their walk this weekend, among them Nina and Karl (yay!!) who will probably not be moving to Chicago this summer after all. It’s only been a year since my own graduation, but i feel like the student life is very far removed from me. I never felt like school was where i wanted to be, and i’m thrilled to be firmly out in the working world now. God knows if i’ll ever go back to school, but if i do it won’t be for quite a while yet.

I’ll be getting some important calls this week, hopefully, so keep your fingers crossed for me. I’m still not completely sure where i want to be though, so i might keep sending out those applications.

It was the envelope, right?

I received three “no thanks” and one call for an interview today. I also applied for one more job, but there’s a drawback to these online job searches in that you can only send your resume as text to most of them. For a graphic designer that doesn’t quite cut it, and it takes some digging to find any alternative method of applying to most of the jobs i’ve looked at.

I think i need to re-write my resume and re-think my cover letter strategies. I suspect i just don’t have enough experience to satisfy most employers, which is a major drag.

Anybody know an easy way to print light colors on black paper? Embossing a stamp would be too craft-y, i think. I’d better call some local print shops.

I want to go buy things to console myself. I’m in need of a cute track jacket (i.e. hoodless hoodie with stripes on the sleeves) but can’t ever find one i like. I can’t figure out what the heck happened to the black hoodie i used to have… every once in a while i just LOSE an article of clothing–not just socks, mind you, but bigger things that i like and ought not to just lose track of randomly.

I’m looking forward to playing some Mario Kart tonight. Get my mind off things.
